Society for Humanistic Judaism - Hanukkah

Society for Humanistic Judaism - Hanukkah: "Its roots lie in the primitive winter festival of lights, Nayrot. As the days grew shorter, people feared that the sun was dying and that the world would be plunged into eternal darkness and death. In an effort to coax the sun back to life, they kindled fires at the time of the solstice. When the solstice passed, daylight increased and people rejoiced in the rejuvenation of the sun. Nayrot was a celebration of the triumph of light and life over winter's darkness and despair"

Where are they now? The Vancouver riot Kissing Couple - Puck Daddy - NHL Blog - Yahoo! Sports: " amidst the anarchy, Alex Thomas fell to the ground and was too frightened to move. It was there that Scott Jones, her Australian-born boyfriend of six months, climbed on top of her and kissed her to comfort her as riot police marched around them.
Photographer Richard Lam preserved that moment in the most iconic image from the riots, one that became an instant sensation around the world and was recently named Esquire magazine's Photo of the Year."

Gary Misner:Responsibly Being Irresponsible  - HOME

Gary Misner:Responsibly Being Irresponsible  - HOME: "How did you find out about Vagabonding, and how did you find it useful before and during the trip? I first heard about Vagabonding while on a trip in Puerto Rico, I met a man who was a vagabond all his life an found him interesting. He suggested i should read it and i did, shortly after i was on my first “real” trip using references from the book along the way. Most importantly it taught me how to act, gave me an open mind to expect the unexpected.

How long were you on the road? About a year and a half on and off.

Where all did you go? Went through eastern europe, around the USA , Central America.

Hurricane Katrina « Waiting on karma to pay back that debt…

Hurricane Katrina « Waiting on karma to pay back that debt…: "It’s impossible to condense the Hurricane Katrina experience in a few short blogs let alone the 5 years that have followed. I have tried, but came to the realization that it would be several more blogs to truly give the full spectrum. In the first 3 blogs of this series I have given you a taste of my personal experience during the storm and the days that (immediately) followed along with a few bits of other survivor’s stories and some interesting facts about the storm. This has been my best effort to share it all with those of you who don’t know what it’s like first hand."

Facebook (102)

Facebook (102): "Rabbi Shimon Ben Gamliel is quoted saying 'There were no better days for Israel like the 15th day of Av and Yom Kippur, when the people of Jerusalem would go in white clothes which they borrowed [from one another] in order to to put shame on those who cannot afford them [...] and the daughters of Jerusalem would go out and settle in the vineyards, and so they say: Lift your eyes young man and see what you chose for yourself."

Historical highlights of South-West Turkey - holidays from Explore

Historical highlights of South-West Turkey - holidays from Explore: "Riverboat to Caunus
Starting at Dalyan, we take a meandering boat trip through a maze of reeds to the ancient Carian capital city of Caunus (400BC). We then drive to Alinda to see its impressive agora and little known ruins, before continuing northwards to explore Didyma, dedicated to Apollo, and the scattered remnants of Miletus and Priene.

Mighty Ephesus
With plenty of time at Selcuk, we set out to visit nearby Ephesus. At least half a day is spent wandering around the marble streets of this huge Greco-Roman city, once visited by Anthony and Cleopatra and where St Paul preached to the ancient Ephesians.

Pamukkale 'Frozen Waterfall'"

In The Beginning

In The Beginning: "The Beis of Creation.: ' first line of Bereishis contains 7 words. The seven words correspond to the seven days of the week. The opening remark ends with Ha-Eretz, which is translated as the earth. I know none of this is Earth Shattering kind of content. The expalnation then continues with Ha-Eretz we can actually count the hebrew words that are contained within the 1st 5 lines of Bereishis. Try it each and every time there should be no surprise that there are 52. So, we have the first sentence of Bereishis which contains seven words which sets an important cycle, the week. Then by the end of the Torah's description Bereishis 1-5, we have the completion of the first day of creation Yom Echod! I might be looking for holidays here but Yom Echod- the first day, seems like something worth celebrating"

We are involved in areas of Kiruv to the secular Jewish community, helping bring back those of Anusim background,"
