How to Spend a Trillion Dollars - TIME

How to Spend a Trillion Dollars - TIME:
How to Spend a Trillion Dollars
By Michael Grunwald Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009

"As President-elect Barack Obama prepares to throw money at the current downturn — a stimulus package starting at about $800 billion, plus the second $350 billion chunk of the financial bailout — we all really do seem to be Keynesians now. Just about every expert agrees that pumping $1 trillion into a moribund economy will rev up the ethereal goods-and-services engine that Keynes called 'aggregate demand' and stimulate at least some short-term activity, even if it is all wasted on money pits.

But Keynes was also right that there would be more sensible ways to spend it. There would also be less sensible ways to spend it. A trillion dollars' worth of bad ideas — sprawl-inducing highways and bridges to nowhere, ethanol plants and pipelines that accelerate global warming, tax breaks for overleveraged McMansion builders and burdensome new long-term federal entitlements — would be worse than mere waste. It would be smarter to buy every American an iPod, a set of Ginsu knives and 600 Subway foot-longs."

ABC News: NKorea: US Must Alter 'Hostile' Policy

ABC News: NKorea: US Must Alter 'Hostile' Policy: "North Korea said it refuses to give up its nuclear weapons until after the U.S. alters its 'hostile policy' toward the North's government and proves it does not pose an atomic threat to the wartime rival.
The cryptic statement Tuesday from North Korea's Foreign Ministry is the first to lay out North Korea's nuclear stance since the last round of international talks on disarming the North in December.
Analysts say the statement — issued a week before President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration — also sends a strong signal that Pyongyang is keen to forge diplomatic relations with the next U.S. administration.
Stalinist North Korea, one of the world's most isolated countries, has never had diplomatic ties with Washington, which sent troops to back South Korea during the 1950-53 Korean War. Relations warmed under President Bill Clinton but went into a deep freeze when President George W. Bush took office with sharp words for the North."

They make good cars,(I guess) but how about their nuclear weapons?

Gaza fighting rages despite cease-fire proposal - Yahoo! News

Gaza fighting rages despite cease-fire proposal - Yahoo! News: "Despite the heavy fighting, strides were made on the diplomatic front with the U.S. throwing its weight behind a deal being brokered by France and Egypt.
While the Security Council failed to reach agreement on a cease-fire resolution, Egypt's U.N. Ambassador Maged Abdelaziz said representatives of Israel, Hamas and the Palestinian Authority have agreed to meet separately with Egyptian officials in Cairo Thursday.
Israeli airstrikes killed 29 Palestinians on Wednesday after leaflets were dropped warning residents to leave the area 'because Hamas uses your houses to hide and smuggle military weapons.'"

Livni: Israel will no longer show restraint when attacked - Haaretz - Israel News: "Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni said Monday that the Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip was intended to 'change the equation' in the region, whereby Hamas fires at Israel and Israel responds with restraint.

Speaking to reporters alongside her counterparts from the Czech Republic, France and Sweden, Livni defended Israel's incursion into the Hamas-ruled coastal territory as a form of 'legitimate self-defense.'"

Prepare for PR Fallout | Professional PR

Prepare for PR Fallout | Professional PR: "Chicago Sun-Times, another rare treat.
The first and only article (these folks at Duxler are FAST) I read was about the written prayer that Barack Obama left in a crack of the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City. Rule number one: those notes are private. Rule number two: since they are private they’re supposed to remain that way. Apparently, the note was taken (by whom isn’t so clear though it might have been a student) and then published yesterday in the Israeli paper Maariv. I won’t include the prayer here; you can look that up yourself.
But I thought it might be interesting to raise this issue of what to print and what not to print and all the ramifications involved. But of course I have a bigger lesson to offer, too. While I wasn’t in on the editorial meeting during which the publication of the prayer was discussed I have to guess that the editors at least raised the possible ways the public might respond to the paper sharing Obama’s private exchange with his god. I know for this blogger, an invasion of privacy like this makes me very uncomfortable and I wonder a little if the paper will suffer at all. I have to believe they prepared themselves for the fallout and there has been fallout.
The lesson, of course, is that when you take a risk like this you absolutely must be prepared for the impact."

Barrage of Rockets Hit Ashkelon, Beersheva, Ashdod. | Middle East > Israel from AllBusiness.com

Barrage of Rockets Hit Ashkelon, Beersheva, Ashdod. | Middle East > Israel from AllBusiness.com: "Palestinian terrorists in the Gaza Strip fired a barrage of more than 50 rockets at southern Israel on Thursday, one of which scored a direct hit on an eight-floor residential building in the northern Negev city of Ashdod, nearly 40 kilometers (24 miles) from the Hamas-ruled coastal territory.
The strike on the Ashdod apartment house caused a fire to erupt in the building and seriously damaged the top floor. Rescue workers evacuated all residents, fearing that the building would collapse. The incident ended without physical injuries and the damaged structure still intact. A number of people were treated for shock, however, many of them children and elderly people.
Four Grad rockets exploded a few minutes after the Ashdod strike in the city of Ashkelon and about two more struck the city a few hours later."
